My morning routine wrecked my energy

I ran with this morning routine for 3+ years:

  • Wake up 5a

  • Coffee

  • Read + plan the day

  • Work

  • Exercise break

This routine helped me launch a business while working a 9-5, get priorities done, and stay in shape.

But I was wrecking my energy.

Here’s what happened after the early morning.

  • Irritable at 10a

  • Restless at 11a

  • No focus at 1p

  • Depleted energy at 3p

I thought this was normal. That I had to suck it up, not be a pansy, and push through.

Until I found myself getting irritable with my kids and restless during a restful Christmas week.

And realized this probably wasn’t normal.

So I made 3 changes.

It’s already helping.

After I wake up, I follow these blocks.

Each block is 20-30 min:

  • 1st block: Eat (protein + fat, no carbs)

  • 2nd block: Energize (coffee, Bible, plan)

  • 3rd block: Exercise (kettlebells + bodyweight)

My energy hasn’t been this high, steady, or consistent for a long time.

I got duped by hustle culture.

In trying to be productive, I was sabotaging a day’s worth of energy.

I’ll be testing and tweaking this for a month.

Takeaway: the order of the first part of the day matters.

🔎 Finds

Drinking coffee before breakfast impairs your body’s ability to control insulin.

In practical terms.

- The body doesn’t process sugars as easily

- When you eat, energy spikes unnaturally

- Then CRASHES later

This is what was happening to me.

Drinking coffee after breakfast fixed it.

Same coffee. Different order. Totally different day.

P.S. every body is different. Listen to yours.

Nostalgia.

This article was my most popular find of 2025.

On a chai tea kick these days.

It’s not only tasty.

There are loads of benefits.

Heart health, blood sugar regulation, and digestion to name a few.

Just a simple process at home.

Get consistent in 2026.

Be strong,

Don
