Dealing with my shame of overeating
From 2018 - 2020, I’d down tortilla chips, eat 2 helpings of dinner, and stuff myself with Oreos until 10pm.
At 10pm I’d feel guilty.
And I’d make promises to myself:
“I’m gonna workout tomorrow at 4a”
“I’m eating Paleo starting tomorrow”
“I’m gonna fast until 10a”
I’d win for 3 days. But then fall back into the tortilla chips.
Those unkept promises to myself caused whiplash and doubt that change was possible.
All glory to God that He’s changing me. It’s 100% possible.
And He gave me a massive gift to help.
My wife.
I started opening up to her about this. We changed our groceries. Pantry. Fridge. Habits eventually followed.
Dealing with shame is a sinister part of weight loss.
Shame hates truth and humans. Shame wants to live in secret 10pm moments.
If you’re there now, know you’re not alone.
My encouragement is to talk to a human who knows you and tell them the truth.
A friend. Spouse. Pastor. Coach. Community. Someone with flesh and bones.
And I’d suggest stop telling Google, Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, podcasts, or YouTube about this.
Shame gets to hide there.
Those things want our attention. Not our transformation.
